Home Detox Series: 5 Toxic Things to Ditch and Switch for a Bathroom Detox

Moms, detoxes have become all the rage these days, and now is the perfect time to give your bathroom a detox too!

It is important to remember that the cleaning products we use may be potentially dangerous to our health and especially to our kids. So as part of our Home Detox Blog Series, we’ll start detoxing your bathroom by ditching any dangerous cleaners for environmentally friendly and non-toxic alternatives.

Trust me, once you've completed your bathroom detox, you'll be left with a safe, clean, and sparkling haven that you can now enjoy with your family!
Let’s get started!

Ditch these 5 Toxic Things and Switch to All-natural Solutions

1. Ditch those Hazardous Disinfectants.

As moms, we need to understand the risks associated with disinfectants. While they can help reduce the presence of germs, they can also be hazardous for your family.

Much like pesticides, they can lead to skin, eye, and respiratory irritation - not to mention a risk of ingestion if inhaled. You don't have to reach for strong chemical cleaners to keep your home germ-free!
Switch to Vinegar!
With acetic acid as its main ingredient, this natural disinfectant will break down the dirt and bacteria on dirty surfaces.

Here’s the tip: Just mix equal parts vinegar and water and then use it to give your bathroom the detox it needs!

Vinegar is your key to a sanitary sanctuary. I also used it to Detox our Kitchen, read it here: Detox your Kitchen in 3 Simple Steps.

2. Ditch those Toxic Drain Cleaners.

Not to scare you here, mama, but chemical drain cleaners may contain corrosive and dangerous ingredients, such as lye and sulfuric acid. These ingredients can cause serious damage to the skin, clothes, and even the plumbing in your home.

More problems, right? They may be powerful but they're dangerous - it is not worth the risk. Stick to natural and non-toxic cleaners to keep your family safe.

Switch to baking soda and vinegar!

Here’s another cleaning hack for you: Blend up a half cup of each, pour it into your sink's drain, and let it sit for an hour. After that, fill a pan with hot water to pour down the drain, and then run the hot water until it's clear.

If you're really in a jam, get yourself a plumber's snake to sort out the tough stuff. These readily available natural ingredients and tools are not only safer for your family, but they can be a real money-saver in the long run!

3. Ditch those Dangerous Mold Removers.

Have you been considering using a mold remover? Well, I've got news for you – many of the products on the market contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde and ammonia that can be harmful to you and your family’s health.

Yikes!

Switch to Baking Soda!
I cannot emphasize how cool and effective baking soda is for a non-toxic bathroom detox! It’s a super safe option to remove black mold, plus it absorbs moisture that attracts the mold.

Here’s how I use it to whip out those nasties:
  1. Mix some baking soda with water in a spray bottle
  2. Spray away on the affected area.
  3. Scrub the area with a brush
  4. Rinse away any residue and baking soda left behind
  5. Give the surface another spritz and let it dry sans wiping to remove any remaining mold and prevent it from coming back.

I also love Tea tree, Oregano, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Clove, Grapefruit, and Thyme, either by themselves or in a mix, to help give my baking soda a boost!

4. Ditch those Harmful Personal Care Products.

It already feels overwhelming just thinking about it, right? Trust me, after reading the labels and finding out how many chemicals and carcinogens are in my care products, I swapped them out like a breeze!

Switch to Non-toxic Alternatives!

Just grab one item from your basket of products each week and look for a healthier alternative. I love using doTERRA’s personal care products because not only do I trust that their testing and supply chain integrity means my products are free of toxins, I love that my purchase supports smallholder farmers around the world. :) If you can’t find something there, check out EWG’s guide to choosing safer products - they got you covered!

5. Ditch those Synthetic Air Fragrances.

A clean and fresh-smelling bathroom is an essential element of a healthy home. But let’s face it, as much as it is easier to pick up a can of air freshener, we all know the dangers of using aerosol. It contains various toxins and chemicals like acetaldehyde. Every time you spray them, you're breathing them in. Yikes!

I got some tips from the American Lung Association's blog right here: Clean Air at Home.

Switch to Essential Oils!

Diffuse a deodorizing essential oil blend. There are plenty of DIY essential oil deodorizers, but I’ve found this blend to work great:

2 drops of Tea tree oil.
Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant

2 drops of Lavender oil
Lavender oil helps reduce stress and tension

4 drops of Lemon oil
Lemon oil is great for killing bacteria and refreshing the air

With a few simple switches, you can turn your bathroom into a toxin-free haven. Just a few minutes a day can help you keep your bathroom sparkling clean without the use of harsh and potentially dangerous cleaners. Not only will this non-toxic bathroom detox pay off in terms of health, but it will also save you money in the long run. And of course, the added bonus is the extra storage space you can now enjoy!
