Home Detox Series: Detox your Kitchen in 3 Simple Steps

Welcome to our Home Detox Series, Moms! Today, let's talk about the heart of our homes - the kitchen.

As you know, the kitchen is where we make and share meals with our family, but it can also be a hotbed of potential health risks. Are you concerned about the toxins that may be lurking in your kitchen and putting your family at risk? If so, detoxing your kitchen is the perfect way to protect your family's health!

Detoxing your kitchen might seem like a huge hassle...but trust me, it's worth it! Make the switch to healthier, more toxin-free choices, and you'll see the benefits - both for your well-being and your mood - in no time!

Here are a few ideas to get you started on the road to a healthier, more toxin-free kitchen:

3 Simple Steps to Detox Your Kitchen

Step 1: Purge Your Kitchen

Check out the products and kitchenware in your home, and research any toxins and health risks they may have. Then, swap out the bad stuff for some toxin-free, healthier options, and your family will be good to go!

Sounds difficult?

EWG can help! Well, EWG is a great resource to find answers and learn about possible toxins in the products you buy for your family. You can use their website to search for non-toxic and effective products and see how they rate in terms of possible health risks. They also offer tools and resources to help make better decisions for kitchen items!

Step 2: Ditch and Switch your Kitchen Essentials

Moms, if you're on a budget, no need to go all-out.

My advice is this: Take it slow, start small, and work your way up!

You can start replacing one or two items every week; from cookware to cleaning supplies, you can make sure that your family is stocked with only the best non-toxic essentials.

Here are a few tips to help you make the transition:

  • Look for products made from natural and non-toxic materials. Aside from using the EWG app, I also found this article helpful in determining kitchen items with potential toxins. I love glass and cast iron to cook with!
  • Read ingredient labels and make sure you understand everything that is listed. If you don’t recognize it, don’t use it!
  • Opt for brands that prioritize sustainability. Invest in reusable containers and utensils to cut down on toxins and waste.

Step 3: Clean your Kitchen with Non-toxic Solutions

Clean your home without harsh chemicals! Essential oils can be an excellent alternative. More and more moms are turning to essential oils for their non-toxic cleaning power. Not only will you be detoxing your kitchen safely, but you'll also enjoy their uplifting and refreshing scents.

  • Lemon essential oil. Are you also the kind of mom who sometimes gets crazy with all the grime on kitchen countertops and other surfaces in the kitchen?

I can totally relate.

I’ve experimented with a lot of alternative solutions to help me clean my kitchen without using too many chemicals, and going back to the simplest cleaning recipe has always been helpful – Lemon essential oil, baking soda, and vinegar.

Lemon essential oil has powerful purifying properties that makes it a great choice for homemade cleaning agents.

Not only will it help detox your kitchen of dirt and grime, but with its clean and fresh citrus aroma, you can keep your home smelling great without loading up on chemical cleaners.

I have the perfect DIY recipe of Garbage Disposal Refreshers for you using Lemon oil.

Garbage Disposal Refreshers
Ingredients:
2 cups baking soda
1 cup salt
½ cup water
⅓ cup unscented liquid castile soap
30 drops Lemon essential oil

Instructions:
  1. Combine baking soda and salt in a bowl.
  2. Add castile soap and essential oil to the mixture.
  3. Add water one tablespoon at a time while stirring with your hands to achieve the desired consistency of "damp sand." Make sure it stays together when you press it together. If you find you've added too much water, simply add some more baking soda and salt until it's just right.
  4. Grab a tablespoon measurement device and scoop packed spoonfuls onto parchment paper.
  5. Let it dry for 24 hours or until they are hard. This recipe should make about 36 garbage disposal refreshers.
  6. Put it into a glass jar and use it the next time you do dishes. Just put 1–3 refreshers into the garbage disposal and turn it on. You will immediately smell the refreshing scent of Lemon essential oil.

  • Lavender essential oil. Unlike store-bought air fresheners filled with chemicals, including endocrine-disrupting phthalates, lavender essential oil is my go-to, non-toxic solution guaranteed to make my home smell great without chemicals.

There have been a lot of scientific studies demonstrating the calming effects of Lavender to the human brain. Whenever I diffuse Lavender in our home, I reduce feelings of tension and get that mental clarity I need during the day. Plus, it's perfect for winding down after a long day of purging your kitchen off toxins!

Rejuvenate your Kitchen
