Home Detox Series: Simple Tips to a Full Bedroom Detox

Are you a mom looking for ways to protect your family from toxins? You’ve come to the right place!

Today, as part of our home detox series, we’ll take a deep dive at a full bedroom detox with the goal of reducing your family’s exposure to toxins.

We all want to live our healthiest and happiest lives but with toxins and harmful chemicals in the air, food, and products we use every day, it can be difficult. Fortunately, there are a few steps we can take to reduce our exposure and detox our homes. From selecting the right cleaning products to choosing all-natural solutions and non-toxic materials, we’ll explore quick and easy DIY solutions for a healthier home.

So, let’s get started!

We already know how to do a body detox, but how do we do a home detox, and where do we start?

Taking the time to transform your bedroom into a wellness sanctuary is a great way to get started!

By removing allergens, EMFs, and other synthetic chemicals from your space, you can ensure that you'll get the restful sleep that your body and mind need.

While it can be impossible to completely remove the toxins that may be present in your home, there are steps you can take to limit your contact with them. Read labels and swap out potentially dangerous products, such as cleaning supplies and personal care products, with safer, all-natural solutions and alternatives.

How to Start a Full Bedroom Detox

1. Go Crazy for Organic and Non-toxic Mattress and Sheets!

Did you know that the sweetest dreams start with an organic cotton mattress? True story.

Not only will your family be getting the best sleep possible, but it's free from synthetic chemicals, heavy metals, and vinyl to boot! Investing in quality sleep is one of the most important decisions I made for my family's health and well-being. We love our Avocado mattress.

If a new mattress isn't in the budget, don't fret! You can still get a restful night's sleep that will make you feel like a million bucks.

  • Get a mattress topper made from organic and non-toxic cotton and wool.
  • Use a mattress cover with a high thread count and tightly woven barrier cloth.
  • Switch out your sheets with organic cotton ones. This can be especially helpful for little ones’ sensitive skin. We have to bring our organic cotton sheets to AirBNBs so our kids don’t break out. :)

2. Ready for an All-natural, Non-toxic Pillow Fight?

When it comes to pillows, the safest option is to avoid synthetic materials and opt for an all-natural latex or wool option. Look for a pillow with a USDA seal, which guarantees that the product is free of any chemicals and more environmentally friendly.

Check out LeafScore’s Most Important Green Certifications for Pillows for more information.

In addition, make sure to regularly wash your bedding in hot water - this includes pillowcases, sheets, blankets and bed covers once a week.

Spray Recipe Great for Detoxing Your Pillows

10-15 drops of Purify Essential oil blend
16 ounce glass mister bottle
Water

Combine Purify Essential oil blend and water into the glass mister spray bottle. Spray as needed to freshen up your pillows from unpleasant odors.

3. Invest in Detoxing the Air in Your Home
Let’s start with the easiest one here, mama. One of the best things you can do to improve the air quality in your home is to let in some fresh air by opening windows and doors when possible!

If you’re unable to do this, investing in an air cleaner/purifier is a great way to eliminate harmful airborne particles, chemical odors, and other pollutants. It’s a small investment that can make a huge difference in the health of your family. We love our Coway AIrmega.

Speaking of, when I’m not using my purifier, I love diffusing Adaptiv every day to help reduce the stress of running after a toddler and infant!  The science nerd in me loves the clinical trial data on Adaptiv.

Check out dōTERRA’s Aroma Essentials Collection! This includes amazing essential oils that can provide you with the wonderful aromas you love, while helping you swap out the chemical laden room sprays and candles you might be used to. Plus, I’ll provide a wiki of each item in my next blog post so be sure to watch for that!

4. Create your all-natural cleaning supplies for a sustainable bedroom detox

Instead of using synthetic chemicals, why not make your all-natural cleaning supplies? Baking soda, white vinegar, and purifying essential oils—the holy grail of a detoxified home.

Not only is it safe and healthy for the kids, but boy does it save us a lot of $$$ too!

It’s time to get creative and customize your own all-natural solutions and switch out traditional laundry detergents for natural options like Lemon, Purify, or dōTERRA On Guard Laundy Detergent.

I swear by this All-Purpose Spray recipe for a non-toxic alternative:

Essential Oil All-Purpose Spray

Recommended combinations:
15 drops each of Lavender and Lemon

5. Upgrade your family's sleep game by introducing all-natural and calming scents in your bedroom

To wrap up our home detox-bedroom series, use calming essential oils to help fight stress and get a restful sleep.

There are plenty of options to choose from! There are pillow sprays, diffuser blends, or soy candles that you can use to support you with your full bedroom detox.

Lavender essential oil, in particular, has been proven to evoke feelings of calmness and improve sustained sleep quality. For an extra special touch, you can even try making your own DIY lavender pillow spray!

All you need is some Lavender essential oil, witch hazel, and water. Simply mix the ingredients together and add a few drops to your pillow before bed. This will help you to drift off into a peaceful sleep and wake up refreshed.

We all want the best for our families - and now you don't have to break the bank to get it! With a few easy DIY tips, you can create a clean and healthy environment for your little ones.
